Children & HNPP

Scientific articles

Although people are believed not to have significant symptoms during childhood, below you will find literature on children and HNPP (new to old publications).

Many children will consider certain symptoms as normal, so these symptoms often go unnoticed. If HNPP runs in your family, you might be vigilant for this type of symptoms. For example: numbness in hand when writing or colouring or repetitive use, pains that are considered as growing pains, ankle sprains ...

Other symptoms described in literature and online in children: foot drop, delay in learning to walk (list in progress).

If you know there is a chance that your child has HNPP (50 % chance if you or your partner have it), you can make small changes to their lives without interrupting a normal childhood experience. Consult with a neurologist or medical professional when you suspect that your child has HNPP. Don't automatically assume that the symptoms are part of HNPP.  It might be something else that does have a cure or that needs medical attention.

(A previously healthy 10-year-old girl visited our hospital with a 3-day history of weakness and sensory disturbances in the left hand. Muscle weakness was most prominent in the left ring and little fingers, and tingling sensation existed primarily in the left thumb, index, and middle fingers. These symptoms occurred after playing Korean Jacks called Gonggi for long hours with her left elbow on the table, propping her chin in the palm of her left hand.  )
